On February 9, 2013, my incredible dad passed away from colorectal cancer that had metastasized to his liver. We buried him on Valentine's Day of that same year. For a long time, I absolutely dreaded that holiday. But as I slowly began to heal, I learned that in order to decrease the pain, I had to increase the joy. It was time to honor his life rather than just mourn it. He was a gentle man, with a servant's heart. It was time to do what he did best...Love others.
I spent months praying and thinking, asking God to show me how to best honor his life. But I kept coming back to one thing. It wasn't just his journey. It wasn't just his diagnosis. It was THEIRS. My parents, they were a team. An incredible one. And that's what I wanted to celebrate.
A free day of photoshoots, for couples who were facing, or had faced cancer, with the sole purpose of capturing the love and strength that existed between them. I wanted to let their LOVE take center stage. Tell their stories. Celebrate their commitment.
A conversation with a dear friend, who knew my heart SO well, brought me to the name...Project 14. The "14" comes from the date on which we buried him, as well as from the bible verse, Exodus 14:14 which so boldly states, "The Lord your God will fight for you. All you have to do is be still."
The first Project 14 took place on March 17, 2018. Fifteen amazing couples took part in what would end up being one of the most inspirational days of my life. My dream had become a reality. Because of them.
